Black Sox Fix 2023 Historic Autographs The Mob 2 Aurora

The Black Sox Scandal was a major game-fixing incident in Major League Baseball (MLB), involving eight members of the Chicago White Sox who were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. The scandal arose in an era when players were bound by the "reserve clause," which prevented them from negotiating their own salaries, making them vulnerable to bribes.

In September 1919, a group of players, led by first baseman Chick Gandil, conspired with a gambling syndicate headed by Arnold Rothstein to fix the series. The conspirators, frustrated by low wages and a lack of bargaining power, sought to profit by betting against their own team. The scheme nearly unraveled due to Rothstein's associates not fully delivering on promised payments, but the players proceeded with the plan, and the Reds won the series 5-3.

The scandal prompted a criminal investigation, but all players were acquitted in 1920. Despite this, the newly appointed Commissioner of Baseball, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, imposed lifetime bans on the eight implicated players: Gandil, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Eddie Cicotte, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, Fred McMullin, Charles Risberg, George "Buck" Weaver, and Claude "Lefty" Williams. This scandal led to the establishment of stringent rules against gambling in baseball, rules that continue to govern the sport.
