The Chicago Outfit is an organized crime syndicate that originated in 1910 as the South Side Gang under the leadership of "Big Jim" Colosimo. It is distinctively referred to as the "Outfit" rather than a "Family" because it included members beyond the Italian community, encompassing Irish and Jewish affiliates as well. Initially, the Outfit engaged in various illicit activities, including gambling, prostitution, and racketeering.
By 1919, Al Capone had joined the organization, brought in by Johnny "The Fox" Torrio, who had earlier solved the gang's problems with Black Hand extortion. Capone's arrival coincided with the beginning of Prohibition, which presented vast opportunities for illegal alcohol sales. Colosimo's reluctance to embrace bootlegging led to his assassination in 1920, an act believed to have been orchestrated by Torrio and Capone. This event allowed Torrio to take over, and eventually, in 1925, he handed control to Capone after an ambush left him wounded.
Under Capone's leadership, the Chicago Outfit rose to unprecedented power, becoming infamous for its involvement in illegal activities and violent enforcement tactics.
