Joseph Salvatore "Skinny Joey" Merlino (born 1962) is a notable figure in organized crime, known as the Boss of the Philadelphia Family during the early 2000s. Despite surviving 25 assassination attempts and serving 14 years in prison, Merlino claims to have retired from a life of crime. However, many believe he continues to influence the Philadelphia Mafia. Merlino's criminal activities have included extortion, drug trafficking, gambling, and loan sharking. He gained a reputation for being particularly ruthless and for seeking the limelight, often hosting extravagant events and frequenting high-end nightlife spots.
In 2001, Merlino was convicted of racketeering and illegal gambling, largely due to testimony from informant Ralph Natale. After serving his sentence, Merlino has split his time between Florida and Philadelphia. As recently as January 2023, he made headlines with a public appearance alongside former President Donald Trump.
